Land Acknowledgement
Birthwork is inherently spiritual in nature. Therefore, it is important to us to acknowledge the nations and tribes who practice ancient wisdom in the realm of childbirth and postpartum healing methodologies. They inhabited this land before it was established as Chicago. This land was previously the homelands of the Council of Three Fires - the Ojibwe, Odawa and Potawatomi—all related Anishinaabe Tribes—in addition to Ho-Chunk, Kaskaskia, Kickapoo, Mascouten, Menominee, Meskwaki, Myaamia, Peoria, and Sac and Fox.
Indigo Road Collective was established by the labor, skill, and generational wisdom of African American and Indigenous women. It is important that we call out the people who perpetuate violence against Black and Brown bodies in any capacity, especially in the realm of maternal and infant health. We are committed to learning, making space, and listening to the stories of ALL maragalized communities in order to maintain safe practices within our work. Our goal is to always provide ethical and accessible birth work to our community.
Here are some ways that you can learn more about the Indigenous community here in Chicago. Please consider donating, volunteering, or using your platform to help them reclaim the land that rightfully belongs to them.
